Cross Stitch – Ode to Grandma

September 8, 2021

My grandmother loved to cross stitch. She made things to put on the walls. She made pillows. She made decorations. She cross stitched the seasons. When I was growing up she would buy me small kits, 3x5in designs that 12 year old me might be able to finish. I liked doing them. They had specific directions, the pattern to follow was clear, and over time I felt like I was creating something magnificent. I bought this cross stitch myself years ago, so long ago that I can’t actually remember. I’ve worked on it in starts and spurts as other projects and life have waxed and waned. My grandmother died in 2016 and I know she’d be proud that I finally finished this masterpiece. (Hopefully it won’t take me another couple decades to get this framed and put up on my wall).

I enjoyed finishing this piece so much that I think I’m going to create some more abstract smaller pieces using cross-stitch. I’ll keep you posted on my progress.
