Week #41: Creative Writing Challenge – Which Character Would You Be?

December 6, 2021

If you could live in any book you’ve ever read, what book would that be and which character would you choose to be?

A little non-fiction to throw in here and an homage to my favorite Young Adult fantasy series: Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas. It is a seven-book series that follows assassin Celaena Sardothian in her quest to save the world. I love this series for several reasons including:

  1. Strong female characters. Lots of them. They’re opinionated, don’t take any shit from the male characters, are capable in most situations, and learn to ask for help when they need it.
  2. Swashbuckling action. Yes it’s cliche, but in book five they literally fight from the decks of ships, so I think it’s more fact than cliche. Also, there are pirates, so there’s that.
  3. Not everything works out perfectly in the end. I detest books that tie up every single loose end into a pretty little package. These books are raw in some of the story-lines, which, in my opinion, makes the experience of reading more enjoyable.
  4. The love story/ies. Yes, I do enjoy a little love story here and there, and the ones in this series rival Celaena’s world-saving quest in breadth and depth (from the perspective of a YA fantasy series of course).
  5. Oh yeah. Magic! Enough said!

So, which character would I choose to be? It’s seven books long, so there are lots of characters to choose from, but my choice is Irene Towers, a character who is a little late to the game and doesn’t show up until book six. To be fair, Irene Towers is present at the beginning of Celaena’s journey and is the focus of one of Sarah J. Maas’ novellas that predate the seven part series. I have to hope that Sarah J. Maas wrote these novellas before she started working on the series, already having these wonderful characters fleshed out and just waiting for their spotlights in the series.

Book six in this series has never been one of my favorites, because it puts a pause on the main storyline and focuses solely on an alternate storyline. I will admit that without the detour of book six, events in the seventh book would be very confusing. Anyway, Irene Towers is a main character in book six. She is training to be a healer and has very powerful magic. In my opinion she’s the real hero by the end of the seventh book. So why her, besides being a hero? Well…

  1. She is head-strong, and doesn’t take no for an answer when she believes in something.
  2. She believes there is good in everyone, even when the world is literally falling apart around her, she has hope for the goodness in the human condition.
  3. She never gives up on her dreams and takes risks to achieve them.
  4. I imagine Irene Towers gives really good hugs!
  5. Everyone likes her.
  6. And well, she saves the world even though she’s not the main character in the main storyline. She’s that awesome.

Anyway, if you have any interest in YA fantasy and haven’t read this series yet, I highly recommend it. Which character would you want to be?
