Simply 6 Minutes – March 1 Challenge

March 3, 2022

I saw this prompt a couple days ago and have been thinking about the image ever since. The challenge is to set a timer for 6 minutes and see what you can come up with. Here’s what I’ve got in 177 words:

“I said I need butterfly paint!” I yelled into the receiver.

“I’m sorry ma’am. I don’t understand what you’re asking me to find for you.” The voice on the other end of the line tried calmly.

“Listen, you’re supposed to be the guy who can find anything.” I paused for emphasis. “Anything at all,” I finished in a challenging tone.

The line was silent for a moment but then I could hear gentle breathing through my earpiece.

I tried again. “Listen, if you’re not who they said you were, that’s fine. I just need to know if I’m wasting my time.”

No response, so I continued. “I’ve got a damn beautiful and realistic as fuck elephant sitting on my easel right now and it’s demanding butterfly ears. The thing is, I can’t just paint normal butterfly wings on such an extraordinary elephant. I need butterfly paint to really do them justice.” I paused again and could still hear his gentle breathing. “Now, are you the person I thought you were, or do I have the wrong number?”

Curious and ominous. I’m thinking the butterfly paint is very specific, she’s not asking for particular colours. So, the paint is made out of butterflies? Got me guessing, which is good.

Thanks for reading! Is it made of real butterflies? Does it contain some kind of magic? Is it some kind of tech paint that mimics butterfly wings? I hadn’t decided, so I’m glad my indecision added to the story 🙂

Great story! I know those customer service calls! They get so frustrating. Shouldn’t you know what you sell at the store you work at? Hahaha! Thanks for participating!
