E.M.’s Sunday Ramble Prompt – 3/13/22

March 14, 2022

Haven’t done one of these in a while and I love food!

This week’s topic is “Kitchen and Food“.

Here are the questions:

  • When you are in the kitchen cooking (or cleaning), do you have anything playing in the background (i.e.,TV, music, Julia Childs, etc.) while you are completing your tasks? If you are not someone who cooks or does chores in your kitchen, think of another chore or task. While you are doing that task, do you have anything going on in the background? I really like listening to podcasts while I’m cooking. Some of my favorites are Science Friday (the latest and greatest in science), Feminist Survival Project (hilarious accounting of how to survive since the pandemic and deal with societal expectations in general), and Most Pleasant Exhaustion (about running and endurance sports, training, and news). If I’m not listening to a podcast, there’s likely music playing pretty loudly (as long as my husband is done working). Sometimes I’ll call a friend or my parents when I’m cooking or puttering around.
  • What is the weirdest thing you have ever eaten that someone cooked for you? When my husband and I lived in Uruguay we had a lot of traditional Asado (grilled meats) with friends and families. We went out to a nice restaurant once with some friends and tried all the different types of meats that could show up in an Asado. One of those was intestine.
  • Thinking of that weird food, did you like it enough to eat it again or get the recipe? Um, no. Intestine is the only food I have ever tried where I had an actual gag reflex.
  • What’s the food you usually refuse to share? I was actually talking to my husband about this very question a couple days ago. I decided that I would always share food if someone asked, but there are definitely foods that I wouldn’t want to share. Some of this comes from not being able to eat many foods right now because they bother my stomach. Top of the list right now are gluten free baked goods.
  • Do you use recipes when you cook, or do you have your own way of cooking the food that you love? If you are not the person who cooks in your household, pick a task that has directions/instructions. Do you follow the directions or put them to the side? I generally use a recipe the first time I cook something, but I will substitute ingredients and slack on measuring exactly if I think it’ll taste better. My husband and I frequently analyze dishes for future modifications. I feel like cooking is a lot like doing science in the kitchen.
  • Bonus: Pick three smells in your kitchen that make you happy when you smell them. Rosemary is at the top of my list, followed by bread or cake baking and bacon cooking.
